Gluten-Free Travel

Travel has always been a greater concern for those on a gluten free diet but changes are being made.  Many airports have gluten free options but like our family we don’t rely on that.  Many restaurants have limited amounts of gf food or in the cases of lengthy delays those eateries may have closed.  Solutions to this problem are coming slowly.

Can I carry an extra travel bag for my gluten free food?

Most airlines allow you to bring an extra carry on bag for your gluten free food. It is best to follow these protocols to minimize the risk of being charged at the gate:

  1. Have a Doctor’s note:  Having a signed medical note saying you are gluten free will always be the most effective and always good to carry on person.
  2. Call Ahead:  Contact your airline’s accessibility or disability desk ahead of time. Let them know to add your medical baggage to your reservation.  You can also ask them to add this information to your frequent flyer number if possible.
  3. Obey Regulations: Liquids and Dips still must be under 100ml.
  4. Food Should Be Separated:  Make sure to keep only your labelled gluten free food in your bag.  Do not place other items in there as it will not be considered a medical essential bag any longer.

There are helpful sites to help make your travels easier.  capturencrave.com/gluten-free-eats is one that we have used in the past.

Bella Roma

Travelling gluten free in Rome. Absolutely not a problem. If you are in a rush and don’t  have time to search for eateries just

pop into a pharmacy, otherwise known as a Farmacia. These are not like our drug stores.  I find them more unique almost elegant shops. Here you can purchase top quality skin care and  gf products.  You won’t be able to get a hot meal but you will find lots of dry gf cookies, pastas, etc.

Grocery store chain Celiachiamo Lab has 5 locations in Rome.  They are all dedicated entirely to gluten free products. It is approved by the AIC Lazio.

Via della Magliana 183 , Via Trionfale 15,  Viale dei Consoli 185, Via Elio Vittorini 49/51, Via Nomentana 92@ www.celiachiamo.com

There are many restaurants to choose from depending on which area you are visiting.  Remember to ask all restaurants as many accommodate celiacs and have been trained in safe preparation.  Or to be safer check on the @aiclazio website for recommendations
